Get to know the Galloways
Galloway cattle are a hardy beef breed that originated in the Galloway region of southwestern Scotland. They are best known for their thick, wavy double coat, which helps them tolerate cold, wet, and windy conditions very well. The breed is usually naturally polled, meaning it does not have horns.
In appearance, Galloways are commonly black, though dun, red, and belted varieties also exist. They are medium-sized, sturdy animals with a broad body and strong frame. Their dense coat often reduces the need for heavy fat cover, yet they are still valued for producing well-marbled beef.
As a breed, Galloways are known for being calm, resilient, and efficient grazers. They perform well on rough pasture and in harsher climates where some other breeds may struggle. Because of these traits, they are often favoured in low-input and sustainable beef systems.
